Wisdom Tooth Removal: Costs and Sedation

Posted on:

The cost of wisdom tooth removal depends on how complex the procedure is and the type of sedation you opt for

5 minute read

Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be removed, but if they become impacted (stuck under the gum) or pose a risk of problems like crowding, infection or pain, your dentist may recommend extraction. Taking care of these issues early can help you avoid future discomfort and potentially costly dental treatment.

In this guide, we cover what to expect during the wisdom tooth removal process, including a step-by-step overview, sedation options, cost breakdown and recovery tips. If you're considering wisdom tooth removal in Perth, our friendly team at Mount Lawley Dental is here to help. Think you might need your wisdom teeth removed? Step-by-Step: The Wisdom Tooth Removal Process

  1. Initial Consultation & Diagnosis

Your journey starts with a consultation. Your dentist will assess your symptoms, examine your mouth and jaw, and take x-rays to see if your wisdom teeth are impacted or misaligned. If removal is recommended, you'll receive a tailored treatment plan.
  2. Treatment Planning & Preparation

If you're proceeding with extraction, your dentist will advise you on pre-surgery steps. These may include fasting if sedation is planned, arranging a lift to and from the clinic, or managing medications with your GP. If you have dental anxiety, your dentist can also suggest calming techniques.
  3. Numbing the Area

Before extraction, local anaesthesia will be used to numb your mouth. Depending on the procedure's complexity and your comfort level, your dentist may recommend oral sedation, IV sedation or general anaesthesia.
  4. Removing the Tooth

A simple extraction involves gently loosening and removing the tooth. A surgical extraction is more complex, requiring an incision in the gum. The tooth may be removed in pieces, and stitches may be needed.
  5. Aftercare and Recovery

Post-procedure, you'll receive detailed care instructions. Your dentist may prescribe pain relief and book a follow-up to monitor healing. Recovery time varies but typically lasts from a few days up to two weeks for surgical cases.

Sedation Options for Wisdom Tooth Removal

Feeling nervous about your procedure? You’re not alone. We offer several sedation options to ensure your comfort during wisdom tooth extraction.

Local Anaesthesia
Standard for most procedures, this numbs the area but keeps you awake and aware. Pain is blocked during the procedure.

Oral Sedation
Taken about an hour before your appointment, this pill helps you relax. You’ll stay conscious but may feel drowsy.

IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry)
Administered by an anaesthetist at the practice, this option places you in a sleep-like state with little to no memory of the procedure.

General Anaesthesia
You’ll be fully unconscious during the procedure which is performed in hospital. Recovery takes longer, and it carries higher risks, so it’s typically reserved for more complex cases and for patients with private hospital cover.

Your eligibility for sedation options will depend on your health history. We’ll help you choose the safest and most comfortable option.

What to Expect After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Recovery looks different for everyone, but most patients feel back to normal within a few days to two weeks. You might experience:

  • Swelling or mild pain
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • Bleeding from the extraction site (short-term)

Your dentist will guide you with aftercare instructions. These may include:

  • Taking pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication
  • Applying ice packs and keeping your head elevated
  • Eating soft foods
  • Avoiding straws and smoking for at least two weeks
  • Brushing gently to protect the blood clot
  • Attending any follow-up appointment and regular dental visits

Avoiding complications

Dry socket is a common complication if the blood clot is dislodged. This is more likely if you smoke, use straws, or take oral contraceptives*. Let us know if you experience sharp pain, foul odour or delayed healing so we can help. Contact us to make an emergency appointment.
