  • What Is Invisalign?

The Invisalign system was developed by Align Technology to give more options to older teenagers and adults who want to straighten their teeth but don't want to wear braces.

Invisalign clear aligners are made from a specially engineered plastic that's designed to fit comfortably over teeth while also being virtually invisible.

The soft material and smooth edges make Invisalign aligners feel more comfortable and can cause less irritation than braces.

  • Am I Suitable for Treatment?

Invisalign clear aligners require a patient's compliance and a degree of dexterity to work. Treatment can often address the following orthodontic concerns:

    • overbite or open bite
    • crooked teeth
    • crowded teeth
    • gaps in your smile

Our dentists may also be able to correct some underbite and crossbite cases, depending on how much teeth movement is needed.

Generally, more complex issues require wearing conventional braces, as these exert more force on the teeth. Your dentist will assess your teeth and bite during a face-to-face examination and confirm whether Invisalign treatment is right for you.

  • The Invisalign Process

Invisalign aligners are custom-made for a perfect fit. Each set applies slightly more force than the last to move teeth into alignment.

    • Your dentist takes 3D images of your bite and uses them to design your plan
    • Your custom-made aligners are manufactured at a local dental lab
    • Your first set of aligners are fitted and we explain how to wear and care for them
    • Wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day
    • Receive a new aligner set every 2 weeks (Full Invisalign uses between 20-30 aligner sets)
    • We check your progress every 6 to 8 weeks

Treatment takes between 6 months and 12 months or longer, depending on how much movement is needed to achieve your desired outcome. When your aligners come out for the last time, we'll recommend you wear a retainer indefinitely to prevent teeth moving back.

Invisalign Go offers a shorter treatment time than full Invisalign with up to 20 aligner sets for suitable patients. Teeth straightening with Invisalign Go typicaly takes between 3 to 6 months on average. However, most patients will require more than 20 aligner sets to achieve their desired outcome.

Invisalign prices depend on how many aligners you need, the type of Invisalign aligners you choose and other details. Invisalign treatment at Mount Lawley Dental costs from $6000 to $8000, with interest-free finance options available to help you to manage your payment. We can give you a full price breakdown after we examine your teeth and create your treatment plan.

We understand that it can be tempting to choose online clear aligners to straighten your teeth, however the oral health risks associated with choosing cheap aligners in the absence of a dentist, far outweigh the cost saving you’d expect to make.

Using DIY clear aligners where treatment would usually bedeemed unsuitable by a dentist in a face-to-face examination, can weaken teeth and cause irreversible damage. We recommend seeing a dentist for a face-to-face examination to avoid any long-term commitment to orthodontic treatment in the future.

Teeth straightening is a precise process that needs the expertise of a qualified professional to carefully plan and monitor your results. Our dentists have the relevant training and experience to assess your suitability for clear aligner treatment in a face-to-face comprehensive examination and identify any problems that may need addressing prior to treatment. Only then can Invisalign treatment be planned for your desired outcome.

Many Australian and New Zealand health authorities have issued consumer warnings against the dangers of using online companies for dental treatment in the absence of a physical visit. The president of the Australian Dental Association NSW explains “If treatment relies on imprints and records without the patient being personally examined, there’s a much greater risk that the treatment will not be successful."

This is a common disadvantage of many online aligner treatments, where teeth and gums are not comprehensively examined by a dentist or orthodontist in person. Another reason to see a dentist face-to-face is so they can continue to physically check your progress along the way and ensure aligner sets are being changed when needed.
