Is getting your teeth cleaned worth it?

Regular appointments with a dentist and hygienist are important for maintaining good oral health and preventing dental diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease before they have the chance to develop and may require more costly treatments to fix.

As well as harming teeth, oral health problems such as gum disease can also increase your risk of developing other serious health problems if bacteria enter the bloodstream, so maintaining good oral health contributes togood overall health and wellbeing.

Does tartar destroy teeth?

When bacteria build up on teeth, they form a sticky layer known as plaque. Over time, plaque hardens into calculus or tartar, which can only be removed through professional teeth cleaning and scaling.

If plaque and tartar are left untreated, they can gradually wear down tooth enamel and lead to problems such as cavities, receding gums and eventually tooth loss. This can lead to a number of other problems, including issues with eating or speech and deterioration of the jaw bone.

What's involved in dental cleaning?

When you visit Mount Lawley Dental for a routine check-up and clean, your dentist will first perform a thorough examination of your mouth to check for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease or other oral health problems.

After your examination, your hygienist will provide oral hygiene maintenance. Depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, this may involve:

• Gentle cleaning of teeth and gums
• Loosening and flushing away plaque and calculus deposits
• Rinsing and polishing your teeth
• Applying fluoride to help strengthen and protect enamel
• Oral health advice to help you lower your risks

How long does teeth cleaning take?

A full check-up and teeth cleaning can take between 30 minutes and 1 hour. How long your appointment takes depends on how much cleaning is needed and whether you need an x-ray as part of your oral health assessment (recommended every 1 to 2 years).

Our standard check-up and teeth cleaning cost does not change based on how long the appointment takes.

How often should you get your teeth cleaned?

It's recommended that most people see a dentist and hygienist every 6 to 9 months, depending on your oral health risk factors. If you need to improve your oral health, or you're managing an existing problem such as gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits.

What are the risks of teeth cleaning?

Dental cleaning is safe for patients of all ages. The tools our hygienists use provide gentle cleaning and polishing and do not damage teeth surfaces. We also take precautions to ensure that no debris, gels or fluoride are swallowed.

Avoiding your routine hygiene appointments due to dental anxiety or other concerns can increase your risk of developing serious oral health problems that may require more complex and expensive treatments to correct.

How can I keep my teeth healthy at home?

Regular hygiene appointments are important, but you also need to keep up good oral hygiene habits in your daily life. Your dentist or hygienist will give you tailored advice during your appointment, but as a good rule of thumb:

• Brush your teeth using fluoride toothpaste twice a day, for at least 2 minutes
• Use floss or other interdental cleaners at least once a day
• Use a mouth rinse, if this is recommended by your dentist
• Cut down on sugar and follow a balanced diet
• Drink plenty of water, especially fluoridated water that helps to protect tooth enamel
