Inlays/Onlays and Restorations - Mount Lawley Dental

Inlays and onlays use tooth coloured filling material known as composite resin to seal gaps in teeth from cavities. They are similar to fillings, but are generally larger in size, covering specific areas of a tooth's surface. They help to preserve more of your natural teeth, and they are made in a colour to match the surrounding teeth so nobody will be able to notice them.

The difference between fillings inlays onlays and crowns

Inlays and onlays are:

  • They are strong and resistant
  • It’s hard to stain or discolour them
  • They can prevent further infections and complications

Inlays

Inlays are bonded to the inside of your teeth and blend in perfectly, making them the ideal alternative to large metal fillings. Not only do they help our dentists preserve more of your natural teeth, but they are also very effective at preventing bacteria and therefore can help prevent further complications.

Onlays

Onlays are smaller than dental crowns and they allow you to keep most of your natural tooth whereas a crown requires your natural tooth to be minimally filed down. An onlay simply fits over the tip of the cusp of your tooth, blending in with the surrounding enamel for a natural-looking result.
